Jason Pereira
Storyteller
JP / Jason Pereira, a mixed Sāmoan Artist born and raised in Los Angeles, unceded land of the indigenous Tongva people. His family ascends from Tutuila Island, Amerīka Sāmoa. He is a cultural bearer and storyteller in the shape of an Artist, whose practice is rooted in service to Pacific Island culture and community.
As a visual artist, JP generates works that help tell stories and shape identities of the people and organizations that call on him to create. Cultural Art, Graffiti Art and Graphic Design inform his artistry and approach. The art he creates is expressed through murals, paintings, weavings, and mixed media 3D works. They are rich in storytelling, as they're multi-layered and multi-dimensional.
With institutions such as Natural History Museum Los Angeles, Chinese American Museum Los Angeles, Museum of Latin American Art, UCLA, and many of the universities, colleges and schools throughout California, JP has curated, created, exhibited and presented his works that reflect stories of connection and healing for our Pacific Islander communities. Community based organizations such as NPIEN, PIHP, EPIC, Kutturan CHamoru Foundation, Samoan Solutions, SoCal PICRT, Birth Workers of Color, API Forward Movement, CAUSE and Visual Communications have commissioned JP to uplift their stories and raise their visibility through his artistry. As a Resident Artist of Pacific Island Ethnic Art Museum, he collaborates with fellow artists and mentors emerging artists. He is also a Constellations Fellow with the Center for Cultural Power, and was recently honored with a Congressional Proclamation from the Congress of U.S. House of Representatives, 45th District of CA for his cultural stewardship and artistic contributions to the Pacific Islander community. Currently JP works from his studio in Long Beach, CA.
