In Solidarity, Justice for Afa

Arthur Folasa Ah Loo—Afa—was widely known as a gifted fashion designer whose talents amplified Pacific Islander culture and communities around the world. Anywhere he went—whether it was Project Runway or Buckingham Palace—he brought his community with him. Afa was a beloved father, husband, friend, community leader, and a proud Samoan immigrant.

This past weekend, Afa was killed while attending a protest in Salt Lake City, Utah, joining millions across the country speaking out against the Trump administration’s actions, including mass detentions and mass deportations of immigrants.

We grieve with Afa’s family, friends, and the global community. No one should be killed while advocating for justice. This was a preventable tragedy that speaks to the climate fueled by this administration, which legitimizes state-sanctioned violence against our communities. This system will continue to put immigrant, Pacific Islander lives at risk, unless we change it.

Afa acted on the moral imperative voiced by ancestor and activist Haunani-Kay Trask that “cultural people have to become political.” He was a cultural creative and fervent servant-leader who advocated against injustice—because the expression of our Pacific Islander identities and values is deeply connected to our liberation.

Afa showcased to the world what Pacific Islanders abundantly pour into society—leadership, creativity, generosity, humility, service, and an impenetrable love for family and community. He is proof that Pacific Islanders are essential to progress and that when one of ours is taken, it’s a setback for everyone.

We must honor Afa’s legacy by doing as he did—bringing forth the brilliance, strength and soul of our Pasifika community in the collective fight for change. We show up for him as he showed up for all of us, even if it’s scary, because in his words we should “feel the fear and do it anyway.”

We also join others in calling for justice for Afa because he should still be here. To support his wife Laura and their two children during this time of unimaginable grief, please share and donate to the verified GoFundMe page.
